ISLAMABAD – Pakistan’s merchandise exports reached $15.184 billion during the first six months of the current fiscal year (July–December 2025–26), the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported. This marked a decline of 8.70 percent compared to $16.631 billion exported during the same period last year. The drop highlights ongoing challenges for the country’s export sector amid global economic uncertainties.

Meanwhile, imports into Pakistan increased by 11.28 percent, rising from $30.902 billion last year to $34.388 billion during July–December 2025–26. The growth in imports reflects higher demand for goods and rising global prices. Consequently, the trade deficit widened significantly during the first half of the fiscal year.

According to PBS, the trade deficit was recorded at $19.204 billion, up 34.57 percent from $14.271 billion in the same period last year. Analysts say the widening gap may put additional pressure on the country’s foreign reserves and currency stability. Rising imports and falling exports have amplified concerns about the overall balance of trade.

On a year-on-year basis, exports in December 2025 fell by 20.41 percent to $2.317 billion, compared to $2.911 billion in December 2024. At the same time, imports increased slightly by 2 percent, rising from $5.904 billion to $6.022 billion. These figures show that trade imbalances continue to grow despite efforts to boost exports.

Month-on-month data also indicated challenges for Pakistan’s trade. Exports fell by 4.26 percent compared to $2.420 billion in November 2025. Imports, however, rose by 13.49 percent from $5.306 billion in November 2025. PBS noted that these trends highlight the urgent need for policies to promote exports and control import growth.
